Episode 96: Have a Go: Leadership and Teamwork with David Bainbrigge

In this episode of the ‘Future of Teamwork’ podcast, Dane hosts David Bainbrigge, a leadership expert and executive coach with a background in engineering. They discuss the critical role of leadership in large-scale projects, particularly in industries like mining and engineering. David shares his experiences transitioning from technical roles to leadership positions, emphasizing the value of teamwork in achieving seemingly impossible goals. They touch on the importance of creating psychological safety, the unique challenges of fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) work arrangements, and the evolving demands on leaders, especially post-pandemic. Bainbrigge also elaborates on the benefits of bespoke coaching and the need for leaders to embrace uncertainty and drive innovation. The conversation sheds light on how leadership is a distinct discipline that requires a shift in mindset and a focus on team dynamics to achieve extraordinary outcomes.

Guest Bio

G’day I’m David. Thanks for visiting my profile. I’m an executive engineer who’s spent most of my career in leadership roles. I’ve worked predominantly in the natural resource sector with experience across all elements of business management and all phases of projects. As I often say, experience from shop floor to c-suite, and concept to closure.

Like most people, I’ve had a wide variety of managers through the years. Some with great leadership skills that build a healthy organisational culture and transform skilled individuals into high performance teams, and all the others that create a toxic environment and destroy team morale.

And frankly, over my 25 years of experience, there haven’t been many excellent leaders. And I know most of you feel the same. Lots of amazing technical people, and quite a few great business managers, but very few great leaders.

This has always been my motivation for career progression. A general feeling that we have the potential to do amazing things but just need better leadership. So, after making my way to the top of the corporate ladder, I decided to jump off, and focus my efforts on leadership development.

I believe that great leadership is key to solving many of the challenges we face today, and so these days I invest my time in supporting technically skilled individuals to become better people and business leaders. I also help leadership teams create organisations that embrace change, innovation, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

And I’d love to help you and your organisation. Here’s how;
