Episode 171: Scaling Without an Office: Distributed Teams That Actually Work with Darren Murph
In this episode of The Future of Teamwork, Dane Groeneveld interviews Darren Murph, Forbes Future of Work 50 honoree and one of the earliest pioneers of fully distributed work. Darren unpacks what actually makes remote and distributed work feasible, and why autonomy and agency matter so much in remote work.
This conversation also goes deeper into the human side of work: how distributed teams unlock focus time, why not everyone thrives in the same environments, and how building culture outside the office can lead to healthier people, stronger communities, and better teams.
Additionally, Darren explains the importance of building an “org brain”: a living knowledge base that reduces meetings, improves access to information, and gives team members more control over their time.
Dane and Darren then look at the difference between geographic flexibility and time flexibility, why meetings have become the default (and often broken) project management tool, and how better systems lead to both productivity and career mobility. If you’re navigating remote work, hybrid models, or rethinking how your team collaborates in a rapidly changing world, this episode offers a compelling case for working differently.
